State-of-the-art: microalgae production systems and microalgae applications
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
Over the years, microalgae have gained attention as renewable and sustainable producers. They play a vital role in the formation of the atmosphere. Additionally, they produce primary and secondary metabolites through their unique biochemical pathways. These organisms can be isolated from nature and evaluated to emphasize their biochemical compositions. Today, microalgae cultures are involved in many applications in various industries, such as food, cosmetic, and pharmaceutical sectors, due to the specific properties of their compounds. To put these natural producers into further applications, microalgal production systems can be established for biomass and target metabolite production. From an engineering point of view, the key is the realization of the process, considering all the steps from upstream to downstream. The chapter provides the state-of-the-art in upstream, production, and downstream processes and culture monitoring strategies by underlining the advantages and disadvantages of individual techniques. Moreover, novel designs for higher productions and downstream processes are presented to demonstrate future perspectives on microalgal production. © 2025 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
