One of the greatest workers for Civil Rights in the 19th century, Albion Tourgée (1838-1905) was also a best-selling novelist in the 1870s and 1880s and profoundly influenced the writings of African American novelist Charles W. Chesnutt (1858-1932). In this article, Chesnutt´s novel The Colonel´s Dream (1905) is intertextually shown to signify on Albion Tourgée?s best selling novel A Fool´s Errand (1878), both of which include are set in North Carolina after the Civil War in which veterans aim to reformSouthern society. The theory of signifying as a pattern of African American rhetoric (as promoted by Henry Louis Gates) is applied methodically.
