Diese Arbeit gibt Einblick in das Leben, Schaffen und Wirken des Barockmalers Michael Willmann. Im Zentrum der Untersuchung steht der Zyklus der Apostelmartyrien, der in einem Zeitraum von über vierzig Jahren entstand. Die Gemälde des Monumentalauftrageswerden hinsichtlich der Aspekte der gegenreformatorischen Gedanken in der bildenden Kunst, ihrer malerischen Techniken und einer kunsthistorischen Analyse, unter der Berücksichtigung der verschiedenen Einflüsse der zeitgenössischen Strömungen, analysiert und chronologisch neu hinterfragt. Diese abbildungsreiche Untersuchung umfasst nicht nur die vierzehn Gemälde der Apostelmartyrien mit zwei Zusatzbildern, sondern stellt sich die Frage der Bedeutung der Prototypa und der Anwendung der verschiedenen modi in Willmanns Kunst, die anhand ausgewählter Beispiele erörtert werden.

This publication is on the life, merit and appeal of the baroque artist Michael Willmann. The cycle of the pictorial martyrdoms of the apostles that was created within forty years is the major object of investigation. The monumental canvases have been analyzed with regard to the aspects of a counter-reformation ideology, to their pictorial technique and to an art- historical analysis. The investigations show various effects of the trances at that time on the paintings and question their chronological creation. This publication includes many copies of the original paintings, more then fourteen canvases being part of the cycle. By means of additional paintings the relevance of the prototya and the use of the different modi in the art of Willmann are reconsidered.
