Memories of the displacement. The presidential election of 2013 in the Czech Republic through the lens of historical anthropology

  • Popis výsledku v původním jazyce

In the history of the Czech Republic, respectively. former Czechoslovakia the period of 1945-1946 belongs to the most controversial. The displacement of the majority of the German population from border areas of the republic was realized in those years. Expulsion was accompanied by confiscation of German property, but also unacceptable excesses (so called "Wild expulsions"), in which Germans were exterminated by the local population in certain locations. This study seeks to show how candidates for president benefited from the different interpretations of these events in the first direct presidental elections in the Czech Republic, 2013. Authors´study will be based on the contemporary press, video and audio recordings of presidential debates and election campaigns or printed materials. The aim is to show which interpretations of the events resonated with the Czech public opinion, if there was evident a purposeful rewriting of historical memory during the campaign and how the issue of displacement influenced the electoral successes of some candidates.
