Role of Optical Sensors in Precision Aquaculture

Accurate and timely information is essenatial to develop strategies for sustainable management of natural resources. The ability to automate data collection and documentation as well as the employment of this data for strategic farm management decision in the field operation throught mechanization, sensing and communication technology will lead farmers to reduce management costs, increase profitability and productivity, and also protect the environment from excessive application of chemical inputs. Such an approach in agriculture prodiction management directs to what is now termed as Precision Farming (PF). Implementation of PF idea in aquaculture has recently become more desired by farmers due to dramatic demands of aquatic products during past decades. To apply PF concept in aquaculture, farmers need to monitor and access the status of not only aquatic organisms but also their growing enviroments, continuously. The present review showed that MVSs and optical sensors have found real-world apllication based on tremendous possibility offered by digital camera development and increasing the speed of computer-based processing, however, still new algorithms, methods and re-engineered sensors need to be developed for implementing PF idea in aquaculture intensely.
