Biological soil crusts in post-mining areas
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
Biological soil crusts (BSCs) play an important ecological role in many ecosystems of the world. The chapter describes the main functions of the BSC and factors controlling their development in post-mining sites. Results from our investigations in post-coal mining sites show that under suitable conditions, e.g. on clay alkaline spoils, visible crust can develop in early successional stages, already 2-7 yrs after depositing. Those crusts are usually dominated by filamentous cyanobacteria and are often species rich, containing also green algae, heteroconts, diatoms, and in intermediate successional stages also mosses and less frequently lichens. Uniform algal crusts, dominated or exclusively formed by green filamentous streptophytes from the genus Klebsormidium and Zygogonium ericetorum are typical for acid spoils. Different approaches for reclamation of toxic, extremely acid spoils using BSCs are suggested.
