Sparicotyle chrysophrii is an oviparous hermaphroditic polyopisthocotylean found on the gills of the gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata). While rarely causing massive infections in wild fish, S. chrysophrii is a major concern in aquaculture due to its direct life cycle and the farming conditions that favour its proliferation. Sparicotylosis has become an endemic disease in Mediterranean aquaculture, the severity of which is influenced by parasite age and fish size, and an overall health status. The parasite elicits a robust local inflammatory response in the gills and triggers a systemic response. It likely modulates the fish immune system, although the deployed evasion mechanisms are currently unknown. Fish exhibit reduced appetite and impaired growth, related to the combined effect of anaemia, hypoxia, inflammation, and the stress induced by the infection. In consequence, chronic infection disrupts fish metabolism and energy balance, affecting overall physiological function, resulting in mortality.
