Ixodes ricinus is a prevalent and widespread European tick species inhabiting humid environments, particularly forests, from North Africa to Scandinavia. It parasitises a wide range of hosts, including mammals, birds, and reptiles. By feeding on the blood of wildlife, as well as on humans and pets, I. ricinus serves as a critical bridge vector facilitating the exchange of pathogens between animals and humans, resulting in zoonotic diseases. Its ability to acquire, maintain, and transmit pathogens at various developmental stages determines its vectorial competence. I. ricinus transmits several human pathogens, such as Borrelia spirochetes, causing Lyme borreliosis, and the tick-borne encephalitis virus. Various factors, including the expansion of I. ricinus into urban areas, coupled with increased human outdoor activities, have sustained a high level of concerns about the public health risks posed by tick-borne pathogens in Europe.
