Timing of emergence and flight behavior of Oligoneuriella rhenana (Imhoff, 1852) (Ephemeroptera, Oligoneuriidae) at the Malše River (Novohradské Mountains, Czech Republic).
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
The mating flight of Oligoneuriella rhenana at the lower Malše River (Czech Republic) studied in detail in 1997, 2000 and 2003 lasted from late June to late August with a mass occurrence in the beginning of the latter month. At first emerged the males (around 20 minutes before sunset) and molted quickly to imagoes, followed by the females around 30 minutes later, which molted to imago not until after the mating. The whole mating flight with oviposition lasted for about 2 hours. While the emergence period of the males was short (20 minutes), the females emerged within a period of about 60 minutes. The high synchronization of the male emergence is an apparent adaptation to reduce predation pressure. The extended emergence period of the females increasestheir mating success. The females start their upstream compensatory flight in a height of 6 to 15 m directly after mating. The last flying females were observed at about 10.00 p.m.
