Developments in Establishment of Minefields by UAVs: A Response to Conflict in Ukraine

  • Popis výsledku v původním jazyce

This paper examines the use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in the establishment of minefields in the conflict in Ukraine, with an emphasis on an analysis of their current deployment, practical use and impact on modern military operations. Drawing on available sources, it assesses how UAVs are changing the dynamics of conflict by enabling a more effective and flexible approach to minefields, particularly on wide frontlines. Although smaller, limited-capacity drones capable of carrying only one or a few mines are currently being promoted, their deployment represents a key step towards automating combat operations. The main impetus for the development of this technology is the significant disparity between the length of the front line and the number of available military personnel, creating an urgent need to replace human labor with technological means. Moreover, unmanned systems minimize the risk to human life, making them a valuable tool in protecting human personnel, a resource that is hard to replace in the current conflict. This paper not only describes practical examples of the deployment of UAVs in the war in Ukraine but also discusses the broader context of technological developments in minefield establishment. Emphasis is placed on the current limitations of this technology, such as limited payload capacity or range, while possible future directions for development are outlined, including the introduction of advanced autonomous systems that could fully replace traditional minelaying methods. In this way, the work provides insight into the role of unmanned means as a key tool of the modern battlefield and presents new perspectives for military operations based on innovative technologies.
