New Findings about the Life of David Gans (1541-1613) and his Closest Relatives: a Study and Source Editions
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
Whereas David Gans´ scientific work in the fields of historiography, astronomy and cosmography is subject of detailed research, his personal history is dealt with to a much lesser extent. The present study based on newly discovered sources introduces David Gans´ children and proposes the identification of his father-in-law with the Prague physician of Italian extraction, Abba Mari ben Elijah Halfan (died 346/1586). The study challenges the traditional view that Gans was an economically independent person who might dedicate his time to scientific research. It is demonstrated that, in mid-1590s, Gans moved to the rural township of Byšice (ca. 35 km north from Prague) where he was engaged in money-lending to burghers and peasants. The hitherto unknown „real-life“ Gans is shown as a business-like man catering for Prague rabbinical and economic élites during their flight before the plague and the founder of the Byšice Jewish cemetery. The attention is paid to Gans´ encounter, in 1600, with Tycho Brahe and Johann Kepler and to his work on the astronomical treatise Magen David. The study shortly recalls the history of David Gans´descendants living in Prague, Byšice and Brandýs nad Labem. The study presents an edition of the most important Czech, German and Hebrew sources.
