The objective of the paper is to determine the influence of agricultural sector?s development and employment in agriculture on rural population in Russian Federation and to identify the factors, which reduced the rate of urbanization in the country compared with the global trends. These objectives were realized through hypothesis testing. There was not discovered any correlation between the absolute value of agricultural production and rural populations. But decline of the rural population was not caused by the decline in agriculture, but fall of its importance in relation to other sectors of the economy. There was confirmed a direct relationship and high correlation between employment in agriculture and rural population, despite the fact that the decline in employment in agriculture occurred much faster than the decrease in the rural population.
