The Northern Borderland of the Czech Republic in the Communicative Memory of its German Inhabitants
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
Almost three millions of people of German origin were forcibly transferred (expelled) after World War II from the borderland of the Czech Republic. Even if this region became a place of resettlement immediately after the expulsion, the pre-war population balance has never been reached. On one hand the border region was imagined as a place for real pioneers, as a laboratory of new socialist way of life, on the other hand it was seen as forgotten area at the end of the world, as periphery which everybody tries to leave. However, there were some German inhabitants who could stay in this region. The aim of the paper is to show using interviews with this group of inhabitants of the northern borderland of the Czech Republic how they perceive this region, which role it plays for their identity, how they coped with changes of the world they live(d) after expulsion of Germans. At the same time we ask how they cope nowadays with activities of new Non-German residents who started to discover the old (German) hi
