The paper is focused on the origin and development of Czechoslovak rural sociology from the beginnings to the present. As a result of the changing political, economic and social conditions in Czechoslovakia and later in the Czech Republic, this development was quite dramatic. Twice in its history, its teaching at universities was completely abolished, and rural sociology was included among the undesirable scientific disciplines that contradict the Marxist-Leninist worldview. After 1989, it seemed that the reopened opportunities for teaching, research and international cooperation would mean a rapid development of rural sociology and bring significant scientific results. As in other disciplines, the reality looked somewhat different. The supposed dormant potential did not immediately manifest itself. Teaching and research have been gradually renewed and integrated into international scientific structures.
