Summary: In my contribution I would like to inform about the issue of Guadiana river basin in southern Portugal. The river Guadiana catchment is an intermittent river system with typical Mediterranean hydrological regime i.e. one which is very irregularwith floods during the autumn and winter and draughts in late spring and summer. Native ichthyofauna of the river Guadiana is endangered by several factors such as introduction of exotic species, pollution and mainly by water impoundment due to increaseof water demand in the region. During my intership at the University of Lisboa I had the chance to participate on one weeklong fieldtrip to the Guadiana river basin in framework of EDIA project.
