Differences in the production of volatile fatty have been previously shown to affect the development of rumen. The physiological development of rumen of calves fed by different rations was evaluated. The experimental group was fed with milk replacer andstarter, whereas the control group with milk replacer, hay and mixture. The size and density of rumen papillae was evaluated. The test was performed on 24 calves in the experimental group and 18 calves in the control group, both being slaughtered at 8 weeks of age. Sampling was performed from the ventral portion of the cranial sac of rumen and papillae were measured using a stereomicroscope. Length of papillae in the control group averaged at 2588 (?117) &#956;m, whereas their length in the test group was 3087 (?81) &#956;m. Widths of papillae were 1113 (?51) &#956;m in the control group vs. 1405 (?98) &#956;m in the test group. Density of papillae in rumen mucous membrane ranged between 59.7 papillae / cm2 in the control groups and 74.
