Determination of thymoquinone and related compounds in plants by capillary gas chromatography

The main objective of this study was to work out an analytical method for the determination of thymoquinone and related compounds in plant material, to map the taxonomic distribution of these substances, and to look for some other natural sources of thymoquinone. In 2007, samples of more than ten plant species were taken for the determination of thymoquinone, thymohydroquinone and dithymoquinone. The most of analyzed species were from the Lamiaceae family. The plant material was dried at room temperature and stored at the freezer. The analyzed samples were extracted with hexane ane purified by the partition between hexane and methanol. The purified samples were analyzed by gas chromatography (Varian 3300, flame-ionization detector, capillary column DB-5 30 m x 0.25 mm I.D.). The details of the analytical procedure and the results of the analysis were presented at the conference.
