Freshwater resources and fisheries in the Czech Republic
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
The fresh waters of the Czech Republic are exploited by recreational anglers who catch and consume > 3 x106 fishes (i.e. 4 000 t) per year. The production in aquaculture is c. 20 000 t and is achieved almost exclusively in ponds. General interest is focused on the common carp Cyprinus carpio and, to a lesser extent, on other cyprinid or piscivorous species. The depletion of indigenous stocks is most frequent in the case of native species of salmonids, which have been replaced by non-native species. These changes are caused by inappropriate management activities like injudicious stocking or overfishing. Nevertheless, other threats like changes in the river morphology, hydropower development and pollution are also of importance. Current management activities at the ecosystem level are predominantly associated with the implementation of the Water Framework Directive. An effective organization of fisheries management to prevent the further degradation of natural fish stocks is lacking.
