(Part VI) Bioremediation: removal of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons from soil
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are ubiquitous organic contaminants that consist of two or more benzene rings. PAHs may pose serious threats to the environment and biota due to their toxic, mutagenic, teratogenic, and carcinogenic properties. Biological treatments are considered an environmental option to clean up polluted soil with PAHs. The natural attenuation approach usually leads to a negligible PAH removal. Phytoremediation of PAH-contaminated soil increases the removal of PAHs with low and medium molecular weight from the soil. Using ligninolytic fungi cultivated on organic waste materials in bioremediation (mycoremediation) could be a very promising approach how 368to remove PAHs from the soil. Plant-assisted mycoremediation treatment significantly enhances the removal of PAHs with high molecular weight by higher ligninolytic enzymes activity in the soil. Cultivation of maize plants in association with Pleurotus ostreatus grown on the wood substrate could be a very promising in situ bioremediation strategy for PAH-contaminated agricultural soils. Bioaccumulation factors of PAHs are low suggesting a negligible PAH uptake from soil by maize roots therefore its aboveground biomass does not represent any environmental risk.
