The Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS) is one of the economic instruments of environmental policy. The goal of this instrument is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Emission allowances are a common instrument of the European Union, which is mandatory for all member countries. However, the key issue is the environmental effectiveness of this measure. This idea is also addressed by the authors of this article. The aim of the article is to map the comparable emission trading systems in the world and compare them with the system used in the European Union. The secondary objective is to assess whether this system is environmentally effective in the Czech Republic. With regard to the objective of the article, the main used emission trading systems were described and a basic comparative analysis was performed on the basis of data - time series of GDP development in the Czech Republic, average prices of emission permits and quantity of CO2 emissions per capita.
