Long-term dynamics of the structural attributes of hedgerow networks in the Czech Republic - three case studies in areas with preserved medieval field patterns
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
Hedged landscapes have in recent times been the subject of research and conservation efforts in many countries, especially in Western Europe. While originally planted mostly as cattle barriers and sources of wood, hedgerows are nowadays valued for theiraesthetic and ecological functions and for the integral part they play in sustainable land management and agriculture. In the Czech Republic, hedgerow-defined field patterns called pluzinas date back to the late Middle Ages. Unlike their Western Europeancounterparts, these valuable historical landscapes have not yet been recognized by the conservation authorities and little is known about their distribution, functions, and historical development. In our study, we have evaluated the development of the structural attributes of three pluzina hedgerow networks between the 1840s and 2005. There were significant differences in the development of the three study areas (Korytany, Primda and Stokov), one of which was divided into two separately
