Studies of land restoration on spoil heaps from brown coal mining in the Czech Republic ? a literature review
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
The paper deals with studies on the development of soil conditions, soil organisms, invertebrate communities, vertebrate communities, and plant communities on spoil heaps from surface brown coal mining in the north-western part of the Czech Republic. Studies were made either on reclaimed sites or unreclaimed sites left to spontaneous succession. Some studies focused on differences in development of communities between the two types of post-mining management. Numerous findings of the reviewed studies indicate that spontaneous succession can be a sensible alternative to classical reclamation approaches, especially due to its providing more diverse habitat conditions that can offer refuge for species whose occurrence in the surrounding landscape is sporadic or rare. Hence, spontaneous succession should be implemented to a much greater extent as a part of land restoration and present legal constraints upon it should be eased.
