Does the Presence of Weedy Species Affect the Treatment Efficiency in Constructed Wetlands with Horizontal Subsurface Flow?
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
In the Czech Republic, Phalaris arundinacea and Phragmites australis are two most frequent plants used in constructed wetlands for wastewater treatment. While Phragmites is quite resistant to the invasion of other species, Phalaris is commonly invaded byother wetland species. Moreover, in several systems, Phalaris was completely overgrown by Urtica dioica in the inflow zone and Epilobium hirsutum in the outflow zone. In the present study, the effect of Phalaris replacement with other species on treatment performance of two constructed wetlands has been evaluated. In constructed wetlands Zbenice and C ˇ ista´, Phalaris was overgrown after 8 years of operation in 2005 and 2003, respectively. The results in terms of BOD5 and TSS revealed that there was no difference in discharged water quality during the periods before and after Phalaris was overgrown.
