This chapter provides a systematic review regarding the spread of the High Nature Value (HNV) farmland concept in Europe, considering comprehensive research in peer reviewed journals. Web of Sciences and Scopus were used as databases, focusing on several factors in order to explore the trends in HNV studies in different countries. The findings of this systematic review highlight that it is necessary to increase the number of HNV peer reviewed articles in many European countries, expanding the focus to other taxa less studied than birds and plants, as well as considering other aspects of biodiversity for instance, functional diversity or phylogenetic diversity in order to achieve a more complete assessment of the conservation status of HNV farming areas.
