Diving duck census efficiency based on monitoring of individually marked females: the influence of breeding stage and timing of census
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
Monitoring scheme design greatly affects the accuracy of breeding population estimates. To define the optimal timing for monitoring breeding diving duck abundance, we assessed the effectiveness of duck census techniques using observations of individually marked females of known breeding stage. We used monitoring data gathered during 2004 - 2015 from breeding populations of Common Pochard Aythya ferina, Tufted Duck Aythya fuligula and Redcrested Pochard Netta rufina in South Bohemia, Czech Republic. Detection probabilities of individually marked females was modeled incorporating covariate parameters, such as stage of breeding, census month, year, numbers of counted individuals, individual species, water surface area, and proportion of emergent vegetation. Using a model selection approach, stage of breeding, year and census month were the most important predictors of detection probability. Based on the monitoring of individually marked females and taking into account the incubation period of the specie
