Research on seasonality and seasonal settlements in the Czech lands – an overview (High and Late Middle Ages)
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
The Czech lands had neither natural nor cultural prerequisites for transhumance and summer mountain farming. For the Middle Ages, evidence of these agricultural strategies is completely lacking, and to a lesser extent, they were implemented only in the early modern period, especially in the Moravian part of the Carpathians. Medieval seasonal settlements are therefore represented by localities associated with non-agrarian activities in the forest areas and mountains (mining settlements, forest crafts, and glass making). In all cases secondary agricultural activities are expected to have occurred and sometimes are directly documented.
