Biochar and its potential to increase water, trace element, and nutrient retention in soils
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
Biochar amendments have clear and demonstrable benefits to soil hydraulic properties by increasing the available water content with only a limited influence on the saturated hydraulic conductivity. Soil water deficiency is currently a highly relevant issue as the occurrence of drought spells is increasing on the regional scale, and (at-soil) solutions are required to maintain and enhance soil water retention. Biochar amendments could, therefore, be highly beneficial for farmers in increasing water availability for crops, resulting in an increased resilience to drought. The reported insignificant influence of biochar application on the soil saturated hydraulic conductivity is favorable as otherwise it would imply the risk of intensified surface runoff formation triggering increases in water erosion and sediment yield. Therefore the fact that biochars increase water retention in soils, which maintain or enhance physicochemical characteristics associated with improved nutrient status and contaminant st
