Chapter 6: Green beats: Let it roll festival's journey of eco-friendly innovations

  • Popis výsledku v původním jazyce

This chapter explores the journey of Let It Roll, a major drum and bass festival, towards sustainability. Driven by growing environmental awareness, the festival adopted the Rollin Green initiative to minimise its ecological footprint while fostering eco-friendly behaviour among attendees. Guided by three research objectives, this chapter examines the evolution of the festival's sustainability practices, assesses their impact on waste and emissions, and examines their influence on visitors' behaviour. Using a mixed-methods approach, quantitative data on transportation, waste production, and energy use from the 2018 festival were combined with qualitative insights from an interview with the festival organiser. Results reveal that transport and waste are the largest contributors to the festival's ecological and carbon footprints, leading to targeted interventions such as shuttle services, reusable drink cups, waste-sorting bins, and an eco-camp. Survey data indicate that education initiatives play a critical role, with well-informed visitors demonstrating greater participation in sustainability practices. Despite challenges, the festival's collaboration with academic and governmental organisations underscores the potential for large festivals to balance cultural vibrancy with environmental responsibility. This case study provides insights into sustainable event management, presenting a model for other festivals aiming to reduce their environmental impact and promote sustainable behaviours.
