Role of Biogas in Climate Change Resilience and Circular Economy
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
Climate change is one of the biggest challenges of our times, the effects of which are already being felt across the globe, from rising sea levels and heat waves to devastating floods and droughts. Due to its reliance on fossil fuels and short-term resource management, our “take-make-waste” linear economy is the source of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions contributing to climate change. A significant shift in emission reduction and resistance to its consequences is required to put the world on track to attain net-zero emissions. These characteristics make the circular economy a powerful tool for achieving zero-carbon prosperity. The biogas plants serve as the hub of the forthcoming circular economy. Biogas production can divert streams of excess materials from industrial operations, agriculture, and other human activities that were previously considered waste. These materials can then be transformed into innovative products, nutrient-rich organic fertilizers, and valuable energy carriers. This chapter explores the potential of biogas in addressing climate change challenges, including energy production in different sectors, environmental benefits by reducing GHG emissions, refining waste management, energy security, and economic practicability. The chapter also highlights challenges and opportunities in the biogas industries, such as lack of technical expertise, complex regulations, low public awareness, and limited market access. Future directions for large-scale implementation and technological advancements need to be considered. By optimizing and augmenting biogas production, it is possible to alleviate the impact of climate change, develop a circular economy, and make the future more sustainable and suitable for all populations and civilizations.
