The main changes in the Czech educational system are described comparing traditional waysof education with contemporary trends. Agricultural education is analysed in terms of concepts of education for agriculture as a sector of non urban areas, and alsorural development. Major changes in the activities of the Department of Education of the Czech University of Agriculture are outlined. The previous orientation solely on teacher training is expanded to include adult education and continuing education. Typical features of teachers of special agricultural subjects are indicated in order to reinforce strengths and minimise weaknesses. There is a characterised an educated person, a member of a learning society, who is prepared for permanent, effective and responsible learning. Such a person must be not only expert in the field of personal interest but also in the complex like cultural and moral issues and be a humanly mature personality.
