The idea that an image of Heavenly Jerusalem is incorporated into architectural forms in Bohemian medieval art appears first in Viktor Kotrba’s article on the Chapel of St. Wenceslas in St. Vitus Cathedral. Later, it was implemented as an explanatory framework for the Holy Cross chapel at Karlštejn, and for the New Town of Prague. Finally, the concept was applied to St. Vitus Cathedral itself. The idea of Heavenly Jerusalem as a model for architectural concepts was mentioned as “generally known” and “self-evident”, with no bibliographical note. However, the idea has its author: Hans Sedlmayr. I explore reasons why Sedlmayr was never cited in earlier Czech studies, and very marginally in some of the later texts.
