The design of concentrated nitric oxide technology based on catalytic oxidation of NH3 by steam-oxygen mixture and the pilot plant unit are presented. The process can be separated into four distinct areas: mixing and preheating of reactants, catalytic oxidation, cooling and steam condensation and gas purification. The reaction mixture is prepared from gaseous NH3, oxygen (ł90 mol. % ) and overheated water vapour. The mixture is cleaned in ceramic or cloth filter and fed to the catalytic reactor. The oxidative reaction of NH3 takes place on Pt-Rh gauzes and hot gas containing NO, O2, N2, H2O and traces of NH3 is cooled with water sprays from 750 - 850 °C to about 150 °C. It is then drawn through a tube counter-current condenser. The apparatuses and their arrangement are designed so that the free volume is minimised and the extent of undesirable reactions of nitric oxide with oxygen was negligible.
