Modification and Characterization of a Novel Composite Material Based on a Nafion Membrane and Polypyrrole

The process of polypyrrole (PPy) embedding on the surface of Nafion# membrane was studied. Three methods of PPy synthesis directly on the Nafion# surface were compared. As the most promising one the diffusion method is proposed based on the separation ofmonomer and oxidant (peroxidisulphate) solutions by the membrane. Monomer diffuses through the membrane to the oxidant side, where it is polymerized. Sulphate is in this case incorporated into the film as a counter ion. PPy film prepared on this way adheres well to the Nafion# surface and it shows sufficient electrochemical activity. The permeability of the composite is in comparison to self standing Nafion# film reduced by several order of magnitudes. An attempt was made to incorporate Nafion# as a counter ion instead of sulphate. It could result in higher compatibility between PPy film and Nafion# membrane and at the same time to modify permeability of the PPy film.
