Electrochemical preparation of gas diffusion electrodes for PEMFC

Subject of the present work is development of the electrochemical method for preparation of the gas diffusion electrodes (GDE). The attention has focused mainly on the incorporation of the proton conductor represented in this study by the NafionR into the electrode structure. Two concepts were followed. The first one consists in the cathodic deposition of the Pt metal on the commercial gas diffusion layer (GDL) by means of the cathodic potential pulses. In the next step such an electrode was impregnatedby the NafionR solution. The second concept is characterised by the reverse order of the technological steps, i.e. GDL was initially impregnated by the NafionR solution. Platinum catalyst was electrodeposited subsequently on the same way. Various NafionR loadings were tested. Pt particle size and layer morphology was analyzed by scanning electron microscopy. Prepared GDE were characterised in the laboratory O2/H2 PEMFC. The size of the platinum particles deposited falls in the range 50
