Observing penetration of acrylic solution into wood with neutron radiography and Raman spectroscopy
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
Solutions of acrylates are often used for wood consolidation. Its result depends on the content of polymers in wood and their distribution. That is why it is necessary when studying wood consolidation to use methods that give us information about the flow of polymer solution (consolidant) and its distribution through the wood. Neutron radiography and Raman spectroscopy belong among such methods. In contrast with other methods used to detect polymers in wood, neutron radiography provides the possibilityto study dynamic processes, i.e. to observe the flow of liquids through wood in real time. Penetration of acrylic solutions into wood was observed on the samples of poplar and pine wood. Transport of liquids progressed on the basis of capillary forces and was observed in the lengthwise (longitudinal) direction. Raman spectroscopy was used to detect acrylates in wood and determine the concentration profile after impregnation and drying of the wood samples.
