Powder compacts have been prepared from ceramic and pharmaceutical powders (alumina, kaolin-mullite mixtures, hydroxyapatite, ibuprofenum) by uniaxial pressing with different starch types (rice, corn, potato) and with a commercial cellulose product (blend of microcrystalline cellulose and sodium carbomethylcellulose). Powders and compacts have been studied by optical and / or scanning elecron microscopy, and after pressing or firing the compacts have been studied using density measurements and diametralcompression (Brazilian tests). Systematic experimental work is presented, dealing with the uniaxial die pressing of ceramic powder systems (alumina, mullite, kaolin-mullite-based ceramics, hydroxyapatite) and one selected pharmaceutical powder (ibuprofenum). The influence of applied pressure, additive type and additive content on the bulk density of the ceramics after pressing or firing has been studied, and for ibuprofenum and kaolin-mullite compacts also the strength after pressing is
