Electrochemical alkalization of wastewater for ammonia removal

  • Popis výsledku v původním jazyce

Ammonia represents frequent pollutant of water. Therefore various wastewater treatment technologies to remove ammonia are used. The traditional method is based on bacteria that convert ammonia to nitrate and in the second step to nitrogen gas. This method is cheap without formation of undesired byproduct but in several cases the composition of wastewater is toxic for bacteria. Thus an alternative method must be applied. Ammonia can be removed or decomposed by several methods such as air-stripping, membrane separation, breakpoint chlorination, and electrochemical oxidation [1]. The air stripping is not a complete treatment system because it requires further remediation of output air, such as acid scrubbing. Nevertheless it is simple method without sensitivity to the composition of treated water. Due to the affinity of ammonia ion with water the high pH of treated solution is required. The alkalization of water is usually realized by addition of lime or sodium hydroxide. It increases salinity of treated water and handling of aggressive chemicals is necessary. A possible alternative is the pH adjustment by electrochemical water electrolysis. During the formation of hydrogen on the cathode the cathodic chamber of electrolyser becomes alkaline. Simultaneously anodic chamber is acidified. In the cell with separated chambers it is possible to reach pH necessary for ammonia air stripping [2]. The air striping is realized after passing cathodic chamber in the proposed process. The next step is flowing of the solution through anodic chamber. The pH value is lowered there without addition of chemicals
