Aldol condensation over layered double hydroxides
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
Aldol condensation is usually catalyzed by hydroxides, such as NaOH and Ca(OH)2, but their use leads to problems with wastewater treatments.1 For this reason, various solid base heterogeneous materials which can be separated from the reaction mixture and possibly reused, are studied.2 Layered double hydroxides (LDHs; synthetic analogues of hydrotalcites) are quite promising materials to catalyze such reaction. This work focuses on utilization of LDHs for aldol condensation of campholenic aldehyde (CA) with propanal or butanal. CA was prepared by α-pinene oxide isomerization with ZnBr2 (total conversion, 89% selectivity to CA, 70 °C, toluene). Prepared LDHs were characterized by various techniques (AAS, XRD, XRF etc.). The influence of reaction conditions (Mg:Al molar ratio, conditions of LDHs activation, presence of a modification component, reactants ratio, temperature etc.) on reaction course were studied in order to produce aldehydes I or II (Scheme 1). Subsequently these compounds can be hydrogenated to obtain fragrances like Levosandol and Brahmanol.
