Anaerobic Digestion, chap. 13
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
Anaerobic digestion is the process by which organic material (e.g. wastewater sludge or slurry) is fermented by bacteria in the absence of oxygen. The benefits of the process are that the wastewater sludge is stabilised to an innocuous and easily dewatered substance, and the energy is produced in the form of biogas, the main constituents of which are methane and carbon dioxide. The final product is stable, harmless sludge that can be used as a soil conditioner or fertiliser. The pathogen level, volatilesolid content, and the concentration of heavy metals in the residual sludge requiring disposal, are the principal concerns in considering the land disposal of sludges. It is preferable to regard the process as the sludge treatment which produces energy as a by-product. The new approach to anaerobic sludge digestion is based upon process engineering and the implementation of new knowledge from biotechnology and bioengineering.
