Three wastewater treatment plants experiencing insufficient denitrification were investigated. At on of the facilities the situation was successfully solved by the extension of the denitrification zone and installation of dosing of external substrate dosing. At the other plants this measure is being considered.NUR tests and COD fractionation were used for the evaluation of the activated sludge from the wastewater treatment plants. These results showed the lack of readily biodegradable substrate in the wastewater, which leads to low NUR.
