Discussion about environmentally friendly approach to chemical production had begun far before 1993, when the term “Green chemistry” has been officially defined. The presented research involves three of the twelve basic environmental principles. In particular, there is an enormous negative environmental impact of chromium ions present in the waste solutions produced during CuCr catalyst preparation. The main aim of the research is thus to find an ecological alternative to CuCr catalysts used in hydrogenolysis of esters to alcohols. One promising candidate is the group of CuZn catalysts. Our CuZn catalyst was prepared by a co-precipitation method. After that, the catalyst was characterized in detail to describe its composition and morphology. The catalyst was then tested in hydrogenolysis of dimethyl adipate to hexane-1,6-diol. From the comparison of the catalytic data for the newly prepared catalyst and a commercial CuCr catalyst it is clear that our CuZn catalyst showed a higher activity.
