Ecotoxicity of Wood Leachate to Aquatic Environment
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
ABSTRACT: Wood has been used for fuel, as a construction material, for making tools, furniture and paper. It contains organic compounds (phenols, lignin, terpenes, tannins) that are toxic and leached in contact with water. Previous studies have shown that wood leachate can degrade the quality of receiving water and harm aquatic life. This research seeks to evaluate the potential level of ecotoxicity of cedrela, emire, larch and linden leachates to aquatic organisms. Algal, duckweed and daphnia toxicity assay were used to test the ecotoxicity of the leachates. The organisms were exposed to different concentrations (20, 30, 45, 67 and 100 v/v%) of leachates. In addition, the pH, conductivity and oxygen concentration were determined. It was observed that, the various wood leachates were inhibitory to the growth rate of algae and duckweeds, chlorophyll content of duckweeds and mobility of daphnids after a specified exposure duration. This indicates that wood leachate may be toxic to aquatic organisms. Keywords: Aquatic; Ecotoxicity; Leachate; Toxicity and Wood.
