Combined toxicity of microplastic fibers and Ag nanoparticles in freshwater organisms
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
Microplastics (i.e., plastic waste having <5mm in size) have drawn the scientific attention, as they are abundantly found in the environment, emitted from different sources. One important source is the release of microfibers from textiles during wash. These materials are highly persistent, and might be found in the wastewater system. Moreover, the adsorption of toxic compounds that co-exist with the microfibers can pose an additional risk. Compounds such as silver nanoparticles (Ag-NPs) are also released from textiles and may interact with microfibers. The aim of this study is to evaluate the joint effects of microfibers and Ag-NPs to water flea Daphnia magna. We hypothesize that: (1) Ag-NPs adsorb on the surface of microfibers; (2) microfibers ingestion causes adverse effects on population-relevant endpoints in freshwater organisms; and finally (3) the toxicity of Ag-NPs increases in the presence of microfibers.
