Post-aeration is a technology which could change the quality of digested sludge and sludge liquor. However, little research has been carried out on the process. In this study, we investigate the effect of post-aeration on the quality of sludge digested in thermophilic or mesophilic conditions, with particular reference to the dewaterability of the sludge. Eight batch experiments were conducted under different conditions: temperature (25 °C, 36 °C), aeration regime (continuous, intermittent) and sludge retention time (2-12 days). Then a similar experiment was conducted in sequencing batch reactor system. Post-aeration slightly reduced the amount of sludge, bat in addition it did also have positive effects on total ammonia nitrogen (TAN) concentration, dissolved COD and sludge dewaterability.
