    More and more emphasis has recently been put to increase the effectivity of sludge stabilization. The reason is the stricter legislation due to the presence of specific pollutants and pathogens, as well as the possibility of improving the energy balance of wastewater treatment and the effort to minimize the final amount of sludge. Although anaerobic stabilization is considered to be optimal for large wastewater treatment plants, its products (biogas, sludge liquor and digested sludge) must be mostly further treated. Postaeration, where digested sludge is introduced into aerobic conditions, is a technology that could improve the quality of sludge and sludge liquor in many ways. Although it is a fairly simple process, only a few research groups have been dealing with this issue, and few data have been published. In this study, batch experiments have been performed first, showing that postaeration affects the total ammonia nitrogen (TAN) and sludge dewaterability. Based on the results and knowledge gained during these experiments, the postaeration was investigated in a further experimental arrangement, through a semi-continuous batch reactor (SBR). Improvement of sludge quality was again evaluated in terms of selected parameters. The hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 8, 6, 4 and 2 days and different aeration intensities were tested. The biggest changes of observed parameters were recorded at the longest HRT. With shorter HRT an effect of postaeration was smaller.
