Water reuse has emerged as a critical solution to address water scarcity in the European Union (EU), where over one-third of the region faces significant water shortages. Increasing population demands and climate change have exacerbated the challenges of ensuring adequate water quality and quantity. Excessive water abstraction, particularly for agricultural irrigation, industrial use, and urban development, threatens the EU’s water environment. In response, the European Commission has emphasized water savings and efficiency, with treated wastewater from urban treatment plants providing a viable alternative for various applications, especially agriculture. This study explores the hydrological balance and water reuse practices in the Czech Republic, highlighting barriers, such as inconsistent regulations, inadequate treatment technologies, and public resistance. The study further details the EU Regulation 2020/741, which sets minimum requirements for water reuse, ensuring public health and environmental protection. The research also presents an experimental case study in Prague, where treated effluent from a wastewater treatment plant was used for irrigating urban greenery. Results showed that the effluent, after undergoing tertiary treatment with ultraviolet radiation and ultrafiltration, met the stringent quality standards set by the regulation. Despite some challenges, such as microbial contamination and trace element accumulation, the study concludes that treated wastewater can be safely used for urban irrigation, promoting water sustainability and aligning with the EU’s Circular Economy objectives. The research underscores the need for comprehensive stakeholder engagement and public awareness to overcome regulatory and social barriers, advocating for broader adoption of water reuse practices in the Czech Republic and beyond. © 2025 Elsevier Inc.
