    Identification of Viagra(R) Counterfeits by Molecular Spectroscopic Methods

    Since the Pfizer's medicine for treating erectile dysfunction Viagra(R) was released in 1998, there were many attempts to produce and sell its counterfeits. Because of the nature of the problem it treats, many people prefere buying it annonymously on the Internet than getting it legaly on receipt. The considerable amount of Viagra(R) counterfeits available on the black market creates a need of analysing them as quickly and reliably as possible. Different analytical methods have been used for the identification of counterfeits, for example X-ray crystallography, nuclear magnetic resonance or various spectroscopic methods. In the present work, Raman spectroscopy was used for the study of the original preparations and counterfeits. There are many favourable aspects of using Raman spectroscopy: the analysis is quick and not destructive and there is no need of sample preparation (spectra of the bulk of tablets can be measured through their coating). Also the future use of chiroptical methods for studying erectile dysfunction medications will be discussed. According to our results, the original and counterfeit preparations can be reliably distinguished according to their spectra. In the spectra of counterfeits, there were missing bands in comparison to the spectra of the original preparations, suggesting that any substance declared to be present was not found in the studied counterfeit. On the other hand, some counterfeits were identified by the presence of additional bands in comparison to the original Viagra(R), so there were substances that the original preparations do not contain.
