Determination of Partial Mass Transfer Coefficients from Concentration Profiles in a Distillation Column.

Method, which enables to obtain kLa and kGa simultaneously, has been worked out for binary distillation systems. The method consists in a fitting of the concentration profile along the column obtained by the integration of a differential model to the experimental one. The differential model is built upon mass balance, enthalpy balance and phase equilibrium relation. The concentration profile obtained by the integration of these equations is fitted to the experimental one optimising kLa and kGa parameters. Experiments were performed in an atmospheric distillation column of inner diameter 0.15m filled with 2m of Pall ring 25mm metal packing. Seven sampling points allowing withdrawal of liquid samples were placed along the column height. The concentrationprofiles of ethanol-water system under total reflux were obtained for reboiler duties varying from 15 to 45 kW.
