Knowledge of vapor pressures is indispensable for separation processes and for the assessment of the fate and behavior of environmental contaminants. Experimental determination of vapor pressure in the low pressure region is very difficult; therefore published data show significant scatter and are often influenced by systematic errors. Moreover, vapour pressures for many new compounds used in advanced technologies are not known at all. From environmental point of view, many compounds, which were considered as "non-volatile" are widely distributed in the environment; their vapour pressure is in many cases not known, too. A survey of activities aimed at obtaining recommended data on vapour pressure for several families of technologically or environmentally important compounds is presented. Measurements of vapour pressure by several static apparatuses is described and main sources of systematic errors are discussed.
