Measuring Char Bulk Density in Engineered Wood Products Using Photogrammetry

This study investigates the bulk density of charred engineered wood products, a property that is inherently difficult to measure but plays a crucial role in the pyrolysis process. A photogrammetry method was successfully applied to measure the bulk density of medium-density fibreboard and particleboard charred under varying heat fluxes (40-100 kW/m2) using a cone calorimeter. By including these two materials, the dataset for engineered wood products is expanded, better capturing the previously unavailable diversity of such materials in thermal decomposition studies. The results indicate that char bulk density slightly decreases with increasing heat flux, remaining approximately 50% of the virgin material's bulk density. These findings underscore the influence of the virgin material's structure on char properties and demonstrate the utility of photogrammetry in characterizing charred engineered wood products. The proposed bulk densities have the potential to enhance temperature profile predictions in pyrolysis models, a key, yet often overlooked aspect of thermal decomposition. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.
